Importance of knowing Human Rights

All human rights are universal, indivisible, interrelated and interdependent. It is the duty of states, regardless of their political, civil, economic and cultural systems and compulsions, to promote and protect and them. Universal respect for these rights (and observance of, human rights and fundamental freedoms) will contribute to stability, security and well-being, necessary for socio-economic development;

Human rights, democracy, peace and development are interdependent and mutually reinforcing.

 

Need for education

Knowledge of Human Rights strengthens respect for rights of a human being and fundamental freedom and develops the human personality.

Knowledge of the rights develops attitudes and ensures genuine gender equality and promotes understanding and tolerance among diverse national, ethnic, religious, linguistic and other groups. It also empowers people to participate actively in the life of a free society and promote democracy, development, social justice and communal harmony among citizens. Rights of women, girl-child and disadvantaged persons are integral and indivisible part of universal human rights. Human rights education aimed at full and equal participation of this entire group in political, civil, economic, social and cultural life. Awareness towards prevention of gender based-violence, sexual harassment and exploitation should be a component of education programs.

Promotion and protection of the rights of child is a priority and requires dissemination of knowledge of relevant standards. Special efforts are a given to eradicate child labor, child prostitution, and child pornography, religious and linguistic minorities, displaced persons, migrant workers, elderly people, and persons with HIV/AIDS

Some cases of violation of Human Rights in India

“November 29, 2013-A woman research scholar from a reputed University from southern Tamil Nadu was aghast when her research guide made sexual advances towards her. As she didn’t want to bury the matter, she decided to lodge a complaint against him at the university. But, there she stumbled as there was no body to take up the matter formally, though Supreme Court judgment in the Vishaka Case provides for the constitution of committees to handle.”

“November 26, 2013 AMRITSAR: Perturbed over the plight of Pakistani Hindus and Sikhs in Punjab, lawyer and human rights activist Ajay Virmani will file a case in the Punjab and Haryana high court, seeking to decide their status within a fixed time frame. “Thousands of Pakistani nationals who have arrived in India and living in various cities of Punjab over a period of several years have no identity and are living in pathetic conditions and their human rights are being violated,” said Virmani”

“The Rajasthan Police was held responsible for serious human rights violations. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) received two cases of encounter deaths and three cases of custodial deaths in police custody from Rajasthan during 1 April 2006 – 31 March 2007. In addition, the NHRC also registered one case of custodial violence, one case of illegal arrest, 14 cases of unlawful detention, 270 cases of failure on the part of the state administration in taking action, 107 cases of false implication, and 238 cases of “other police excesses” during the same period.”

“On 29 May 2007, the Gujjars launched protests demanding Scheduled Tribe status in Rajasthan. The security forces responded with indiscriminate use of force. During a weeklong protest which ended on 4 June 2007, at least 26 persons were killed, of which 21 persons who were killed by the police.”

{On 23 December 2007, one person was killed when police opened fire on a group of villagers at Kapasan in Chittaurgarh district.”

“In February 2007, a tribal identified as Ram Lal was killed in police firing in Rishhabdev town in Udaipur district. The family members of the deceased were paid only Rs 1 lakh as compensation.”

“On 25 October 2007, a Dalit social worker associated with the NGO Prayas was allegedly not allowed to enter Lake Palace, a five-star hotel in Udaipur, because he was a Dalit.”

“On 29 June 2007, a fast track court in Bikaner sentenced four persons, including a jail superintendent, jailer and two prisoners, to life imprisonment for their involvement in the custodial death of a prisoner identified as Lakhvinder Singh at the Bikaner central jail on 17 June 1993.”

 

Contributors

The achievement of the goals of education for human right can be ensured only through active co-operation and of all those who have the duty and obligation to promote and protect human rights. These contributions are; Parliamentarians and other elected representative, human rights institution, non government organization and the mass media. As a matter of fact every segment of the civil society have a vital role to play in promoting education for human rights.

The mass media has a positive and a positive and a constructive role to play.

Teaching methodology and aids play an important role. Special attention should be given to the elaboration of educational materials suitable for formal and informal settings, and adapted to the needs and demands of various target groups. Such material should be available in national and local languages, in different forms and in sufficient number. Bearing in mind the special characteristics of the region and prevailing high level of illiteracy, innovative audio visual programmers should be prepared to suit the population in remote and rural areas.

Human rights in India 

Human rights in India is an issue complicated by the country’s large size, its tremendous diversity, its status as a developing country and a sovereign, secular, democratic republic. Human rights problems do exist in India. Problems like sati, child marriages, child labor, human trafficking, religious violence, caste related issues, dowry system and many more are prevailing since long.
